Altered Ego Renga The Cosplay Project After Severn Light In Defence Zone Gallery

< x o x > m e d i a  &  a r t s   is the website representing David Sinden, an independent photographer, arts producer, curator and educator based in Wales.

The latest project by David and his co-conspirator Kate Woodward aka KayWoo is Altered Ego which explores the construction of identity through the worlds of espionage and deception… An exhibition taking over Insole Court in Llandaff was featured in the Diffusion 2019 Festival.

David and Kate are also running a series of PhotoRenga workshops. PhotoRenga are based on an ancient Japanese poetry form and have featured in madeinroath 2016,  The HeARTh Gallery, Llandough Hospital and 76m2 in Pontypool.  Our most recent PhotoRengas have been in the new Cardiff Ffotogallery space and the virtual LockDownRenga from artists homes in April 2020.

David is also creating a new series of portraits of CosPlay devotees, featuring comic book icons, video game characters and superheroes.  The portraits will be published as a book and prepared for an exhibition later this year. 

Significant past projects include After?, a series of portraits documenting survivors of brain injury which was shown at the National Assembly for Wales Senedd, Cardiff in 2008, and Silent Revival, an interdisciplinary workshop programme for Welsh, Greek and Bulgarian artists, writers and filmakers held in Sofia in 2010 on which he was a project coordinator.

David has previously worked for several leading digital arts agencies in London and Brighton, including Artec, Lux and Lighthouse Media Centre. He was co-founder in 1991 and Director of Zone Gallery, the leading photography and media gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne, until 1998.

In addition to producing his own artworks, David undertakes commissioned photography projects, such as the Discovering Development exhibition documenting child psychology research at Cardiff University for National Science Week 2011. David is also an artform adviser for the Arts Council of Wales.
